Here is a list of common problems with A.I. Wars and their resolutions.
Problem: In Vista and Windows 7 the game halts stating it's missing d3drm.dll.
Resolution: This DLL was included in Windows 95/98/2K/XP but Microsoft dropped it starting with Vista. Download d3drm.dll here and copy it to the same directory as the game executable (default: C:\Program Files\A.I. Wars).
Problem: The game is very, very slow in 2D Follow and Birds Eye battle modes.
Resolution: Change your music settings from MIDI to None or CD. Some Windows 2000 and XP systems have MIDI drivers that slow down 2D battle processing. The game always defaults to MIDI on startup.
Problem: The game is too fast in 2D Follow and Birds Eye battle modes.
Resolution: Switch to Birds Eye view and adjust the slide bar at the top right of the screen to your desired speed.
Problem: The game locks up or crashes when I start a battle.
Resolution: Usually caused by the default system language forcing Unicode conversions on AI files. If you aren't running the latest version, update it and get the Default Cybugs for non-English systems from the downloads page. If already updated, open the Cybug in a text editor — if you see <v4ai> at the top of the encrypted section, that Cybug may not be compatible with your system. Try Cybugs that have a <start> tag before the data instead. Download the .AI File Fixer from the downloads page to convert problematic AI files.
Problem: 3D battles never run properly or hang when starting.
Resolution: 3D battles require Microsoft DirectX 8 or higher and a DirectX 8-compatible 3D video card with at least 4MB of video RAM. Windows XP users should ensure they are running A.I. Wars 5.6.1 or higher for XP compatibility.
Problem: When I launch battles I get errors.
Resolution: This was an issue with some Windows XP installations. Try running the game in Windows 98 compatibility mode. Also ensure you are patched to 5.6.1 or higher.
Problem: When I launch A.I. Wars the 2D graphics look wrong or have black blocks where graphics should be.
Resolution: Try running in Windows 98 compatibility mode and patch to 5.6.1 or higher.
Problem: The 3D graphics look wrong and leave artifacts all over the screen.
Resolution: This affects some systems with NVIDIA graphics cards using non-WHQL-certified drivers. Download NVIDIA's last WHQL-certified driver (version 30.82) from nvidia.com.
Problem: Cybugs added to the battle list show up as blank entries.
Resolution: The Cybug filename is too long. Rename the .ai file to something shorter.
Problem: Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library errors involving Norton or Symantec software; Windows Update or Internet Explorer also stopped working correctly.
Resolution: Likely a problem with Oleaut32.dll. See this Microsoft support article for help.
