Chess with Dice
Roll your fate. Move your pieces.

Objective

Capture the opponent's King before they capture yours. There is no check or checkmate — the game ends the instant a King is captured.

The Dice

At the start of your turn, roll two six-sided dice. One die carries one face for each of the six chess piece types: Pawn, Knight, Bishop, Rook, Queen, and King. The other carries a second Pawn face in place of the King. Whatever two piece types come up, only pieces of those types are allowed to move this turn — the board will highlight every one of your pieces that matches the roll.

Doubles: if both dice show the same piece type, it's a wildcard — you may move any of your pieces that has a legal move, not just that type.

If neither rolled piece type has any legal move available (for example, you rolled Bishop but both of your bishops are trapped), the roll stands and your turn is forfeited to the other player.

Moving a Piece

Select one of your highlighted pieces. The board will then light up every legal destination square for that piece, following standard chess movement rules for its type:

  • Pawn – moves forward one square (two on its first move) and captures one square diagonally forward.
  • Knight – moves in an L-shape and may jump over other pieces.
  • Bishop – slides any number of squares diagonally.
  • Rook – slides any number of squares horizontally or vertically.
  • Queen – slides any number of squares in any direction.
  • King – moves one square in any direction.

Pawns that reach the far end of the board are automatically promoted to a Queen — except in the Imprisoned variant, where they promote to a Knight instead. Castling and en passant are not used in this variant.
