Pocket Commander was inspired by the groundbreaking work of Dan Bunten and the 1988 multiplayer strategy classic Modem Wars.
Long before the rise of internet-based multiplayer and real-time strategy franchises like Command & Conquer, Modem Wars pioneered something truly ahead of its time: real-time tactical combat played over modem-to-modem connections. It was one of the earliest attempts to bring competitive strategy gaming into a live, responsive format.
This project is my attempt to revisit that experience—not through networking, but through a focused single-player reinterpretation built for the Game Boy Advance. The goal wasn’t replication, but recapturing the feeling of tension, decision-making, and battlefield awareness in a portable form.
The sequel expands the battlefield dramatically—by roughly 800%—pushing the scale and scope of the original concept further than before.
New mechanics include probe launching for extended reconnaissance and single-button group selection to streamline unit control and improve tactical flow on handheld hardware.
While still rooted in the spirit of the original inspiration, this entry focuses on making large-scale strategy more accessible and fluid on the constraints of the GBA platform, while preserving the intensity of real-time decision-making that defined the original experience.
